Just a few words about myself - John Carpenter - so that you have some idea about the person to whom you are entrusting your child! Married to a local water-colour artist and with two graduate sons, I have lived in the Old Eastcote, Pinner, area for over 30 years. I was educated at Ealing County Grammar School for Boys before gaining an Honours Degree in Latin at Leeds University. More recently, in 2006, I demonstrated that I still have the capacity to learn and teach by adding a Cambridge CELTA qualification to my repertoire. Summer Term 2007 saw me renewing my CRB clearance to take up an exam invigilator post at Haydon School, Pinner. I enjoyed a long and successful teaching career at a private co-educational prep school in W7 until its closure for re-development in 2005. Initially I taught Latin, French and English there to 13+ Common Entrance level, helping send children on to major Public Schools, such as Harrow, St Paul’s, Merchant Taylors, and John Lyon or various Boarding schools dotted round the country. In the early 80s, new owners saw me being promoted to Deputy Head and the school converted to an 11+ establishment. Latin on my teaching timetable was now replaced by Reasoning - with which I stayed until the school’s closure. Reasoning (mainly Verbal, but sometimes Non-Verbal too) was - and still is - a vital ingredient for success in gaining entrance to most schools with competitive 11+ exams, whether Grammar or Independent. Indeed, for the Tiffin Grammars, in Kingston, where our pupils had considerable success, Verbal and Non-Verbal are the only ingredients – no Maths or English in their Entrance Exams! I became Head in 1989, but continued to teach Reasoning and Mental Maths on a regular basis in addition to all my administrative duties. (In fact, the year of the school closure saw me teaching English, French and Geography as well as Reasoning and Mental Maths!) From the late 90’s the school witnessed more and more demand for - and success in - securing places at state Grammar schools in Kingston, Slough and Bucks, with Reasoning always a vital element of the Entrance Exam. In short, I have had many years experience of teaching this age group and have successfully prepared numerous children for all forms of 11+ exams. I can assure you that my appetite for this type of work is undiminished and as keen as ever, and I will, with my accustomed good humour, expertise and enthusiasm, do my very best to help your child fulfil his or her potential at 11+.
