IELTS - The Key to Success

The International English Language Testing System, more usually known as the IELTS, enjoys world-wide recognition as the principal form of English language assessment for those whose first language is not English. Qualification in IELTS is the most widely accepted and most often required throughout the UK, Australia, New Zealand and North America.

The IELTS assesses by means of a test comprising the four key language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening whether you are ready and eligible to study or train in English in the UK.

Most significantly, if you are an international student and English is not your first language, then you will find that most colleges and universities insist upon a required standard in IELTS as a condition of entry.

If you are a medical professional planning to work or study in the UK (or Australia/USA), you also will be required to have reached a certain standard in IELTS.

Many professional organisations and employers now require international applicants to provide evidence of having reached a certain standard in IELTS before offering employment.

Those wishing to emigrate to Canada, Australia or New Zealand are also in the position of having to provide evidence of their English ability in the form of an IELTS certificate.

There are two forms of IELTS qualification available: The IELTS (GT) General Training and the IELTS (A) Advanced.  Tests for both have the same elements, with higher levels being examined in the Reading and Writing modules in the Advanced test.

IELTS   -  A or GT? (Advanced or General training?)

If applying to Nursing or Medical Councils or intending to study or train in English at undergraduate or post-graduate level, then the Advanced level is for you.

If it’s secondary (not University) education, work experience or a training programme (not at degree level ) you want to undertake, or just for immigration purposes, then you should choose the General Training module.

Before you choose, check with the relevant authority, course provider, organisation or employer that you are applying for the correct IELTS!
