Herts Senior Schools with exam requirements

Senior State schools in the Herts area co-ordinate their Entrance Exam papers, administering the same papers in Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics on the same day, usually in late October. A child, therefore, will only have one set of exam papers to contend with - even if more than one of the schools listed below is being applied to.

Rickmansworth School

St. Clement Danes

Watford Grammar (Boys)

Watford Grammar (Girls)

Parmiter’s

Queens’

Bushey Meads (BMS)

If you are also looking at Independent Schools, then the Entrance Exams (mostly sat in early January of Year 6 - check to make sure) make different demands and may consist of papers set by the school itself. As with most Independent Schools, the Entrance papers involve Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics and English. An interview is usually involved, with some schools requesting candidates to bring in a piece of work of which they are proud! Children will need to sit separate Entrance Exams at each and every school applied to.

Merchant Taylors’ (January exam)

Aldenham (Spring term exam)

John Lyon, Harrow on the Hill (January exam*)

Haberdashers’ Boys, Elstree (January exam**)

Haberdashers’ Girls (January exam)

Buckingham College, Harrow (Science Paper too)

* 90 minute on-line exam involving Maths, Vocabulary and Reasoning; also a 20 minute English Creative Essay paper (hand-written).

** Some Non-Verbal elements included in Reasoning Paper

Bucks Grammar Schools

Further afield, you might like to consider an ‘out of county’ application for a place in a Buckinghamshire State Grammar School. Places of this sort are limited, as one can appreciate…..  Entrance exams in October are 2 x Verbal Reasoning Papers, taken on separate days. (Exam marks are not averaged; the higher result stands.) Be  prepared - out of county candidates might be faced with two Saturday visits to Aylesbury to sit these exams.
