Q. Does 11+  tuition really make a difference?

Q. Does 11+  tuition really make a difference?

 A.  Yes, in many ways. Tuition provides a real focus that is often lacking in the large class school situation where the National Curriculum and SATs are the governing  factors. With tuition you find healthy competition; Mathematical areas that need reinforcement receive it; Mathematical areas not covered in school (or covered too late) are taught and practised; children are taught strategies and tips for coping with many different problems, methods and procedures; children receive plenty of exercises aimed at improving their competence, experience and speed with the 11+ very much in mind.

Also, as you are probably aware, very few State Schools even touch upon Verbal Reasoning. Tuition will steer children carefully and methodically through all the different areas that are examined in Verbal Reasoning exams, explaining how to cope with mechanical questions (codes, letter and number series, etc) as well as introducing unfamiliar vocabulary that often is encountered in other areas of these exams. Once again, the children will undertake weekly exercises designed to build confidence, competence, experience – and speed.

Q. Will my child receive lots of homework?

A.  No. Too often conflict arises when a child is expected to do both school homework and tuition homework. This scenario becomes counter-productive and invariably results in family rows, stressed children and/or parents, homeworks not being properly done for either teacher – and, dangerously, a growing resentment and reluctance towards work on the part of the child.

Parents can often help, however, with vocabulary, number bonds and times tables testing and the like, especially if they let their child take turns in being the tester!

Q. Will I notice immediate progress?

A. It depends entirely upon the child. Some children can be very quick on the uptake and everything seems to “stick” first time, for others learning can be a much more gradual process. Experience tells that in the vast majority of cases tuition does see children advance and progress in competence and confidence at a rate that they would not have achieved at school, but that this rate of progress varies from child to child.
